Add water gradually, whisk, then egg, whisk until well mixed. Divide batter into the prepared pans. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean, about 35-45 minutes. Let them cool in the pans, then transfer very carefully to a wire rack. The cake would be very soft. Make sure to cool them completely before removing from pans.  For The Frosting: (We prefer thin layers of frosting. Make it more if you'd like thicker layers) Ingredients: 125 grams Hollman Soft Cream...

Juna's 5th Birthday Cake

Image
It was a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, as requested by the birthday boy. I'm grateful for such a simple kid. The cake was made using this recipe . Such a delicious, soft, and moist chocolate cake, really, perfect texture. I may not want to switch to another chocolate cake recipe ever again. (Don't recoil by the long and excessive title, the cake is practically simple, trust me).  The frosting is buttercream, the recipe was derived from Pennylane Kitchen . Buttercream Frosting Ingredients: 250 grams Hollman Soft Cream 250 grams shortening 180 grams sweet condensed milk 12 grams powdered milk Methods: Using a mixer, beat soft cream, shortening, and sweet condensed milk for 15 minutes. Add powdered milk, continue beating for another 15 minutes until very light, fluffy, and shiny. Notes : This recipe yields tremendous amount of frosting, mind you. There were still so much waste buttercream in my fridge... I think even half of it woul...

All Natural Red Velvet Cake

Image
(Disclaimer to all naturalist out there: ‘All Natural’ here means ‘using only beet and no food coloring’) Hello! I’m back again with another episode of #BakingWithKids. Remember this (not) red velvet cake ? Today @perempuangimbal and I tried the recipe that I’ve mentioned before on that post, the one that using all beet puree and no food coloring, with a little science behind. So, in order to get the bright red (purplish) hue, we should maintain the proper acidic pH of the batter by using natural (not dutch processed) cocoa powder, baking powder, orange juice, and vinegar, which has high acidity percentage. Enough with the science. You can read a little more about that on here and here .  All Natural Red Velvet Cake adapted from  Little House Living Ingredients: 2 and 1/2 cups cake flour 3 tablespoons cocoa powder (not Dutch processed) 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup unsalted butter 2 cups sugar 4 eggs 1 cup milk 1...

Juna's 4th Birthday Cake

Image
When it comes to making birthday cake, I always do the simplest way of decorating. I even created my own frosting using whatever I could get near home. It was a mixture of whipped cream, plain yogurt, confectioners' sugar, shredded processed cheddar cheese, and a bit of lime juice. Oh, I think I also added a few tablespoons of sweet condensed milk. The frosting tasted delicious, only the texture was too soft. But it was enough for covering the cake plainly. Then I let him top the cake with his favorite sprinkles. Simple, yet enough for making him happy. Kids are easy to please, aren't they? By the way, the cake was red velvet. (Not) Red Velvet Cake Okay, okay, it is not visibly red. But it's natural. I used pure beet juice from fresh beets and not a single drop of food coloring. Out of curiosity I made two batch of cake using two different recipes, with more beet juice and less cocoa on the second batch, but it still resulted in brown color. I googled abo...

(What's Left Of) Juna's 3rd Birthday Cake

Image
My son had turned three. After Balloons Banana Cake and Chocolate (again) Banana Cake , It was Carrot Cake With Cream Cheese Frosting this year. We threw a little afternoon tea party where my mom and I made most of the hors d'oeuvre. It was hectic hours before the party and I only managed to finish assembling the cake just a few minutes before the guests came. So the cake had minimalist decoration as always, but I completely forgot to take a picture :( Fortunately I made a very large cake so after the party there were still a quarter left for me to take photos :) Oh by the way, the cake was really good. It was very, very moist, didn't taste like carrot, and blended very well with the cream cheese frosting. I used full-colored chocolate-chips for the topping and they were perfectly matched. They gave additional sweet-chocolatey flavor. Check out the recipe on the link below this post and do make them! Carrot Cake With Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe

Black Forest Cake

Apart from the usual black or red cherry topping, I think strawberries would also make a charming appearance. Like, fresh charming. The awesome moment when you could clearly see the layers that build up the cake without slicing it.

Simple Birthday Cake

Image
For his second birthday my son requested a chocolate cake. I modified the chocolate apple cake recipe, made it with banana instead so I could reduce the sugar amount but still get the sweetness. I made a rather thin chocolate glaze so it would just coat the cake, but not too much. The result were still too sweet for me (and my son) but well, he doesn't get glazed cake every day. And he was so happy to see and eat his birthday cake. With the happy boy Happy belated birthday, dear. I love you :)

Up and Beyond!

Image
I was thinking about Up movie by Disney-Pixar when brainstorming ideas for my son’s first birthday cake. I love the movie so much; it’s so beautiful and inspiring. Besides, my son loves balloons; he would act joyfully whenever he spots balloon sellers on the street with their colorful balloons. So I thought the decoration of the cake would be about them (the balloons, not the sellers). I browsed a baking supplies store for colorful balloon miniatures, looked in a gift shop for real balloons, baked a cake, whipped some frosting, et voila! I came up with this cake. The blue box that I used for placing the cake represents sky, the cake represents clouds, and the balloons are hopes and dreams, flying above the sky to reach the star (the biggest balloon). The cake was actually sugarless banana bread so my son could eat his cake as much as he likes. The frosting was a mix of cream cheese, whipped cream, and shredded cheddar cheese (yep, no sugar added). I made it plain white with fluffy...

Nemo Birthday Cake

Image
This was maybe my first experience on making kids theme decorated birthday cake. And I learned a lot from this! Like, for example, ALWAYS use butter cream to cover your cake when you're gonna decorate it with plastic icing! Because butter cream is oil based. I used non-dairy whip cream instead, you know, the one that should be mixed with iced water before whipped, and you know what will happen? The water content in the cream would make the icing melt! The cake was ordered by a friend for her daughter's birthday, and I prepared it the night before because she wanted it ready by the next morning. I finished the decoration that night and put the cake in the fridge, and it turned out to be my second mistake. NEVER put plastic icing in the refrigerator, because the humidity will also make it melt. Yes, plastic icing is made of powdered or icing sugar, and it would turn into liquid when it touches water. So I was a bit panic when I checked the cake later and found the decoration was ...

sacher torte with oranges! fruity!

Image
this is for my dear friend's birthday. he requested a chocolate cake with some fruity taste, so I suggested sacher torte which has apricot filling, cover the cake with not-so-dense ganache (combination of chocolate and cream) and topped that with oranges. happy orange birthday! Sacher Torte Recipe

Birthday Black Forest

Image
My good friend for whom I baked the chocolate lover’s pound cake also ordered a birthday cake for his mom. A black forest. I decorated the cake just how black forest usually are, with whipped cream, topped with cherries, and sprinkled with grated chocolate, then I added some chocolate thins around the edge and tied the cake with a pink ribbon so the thins would stay where they should be. Sweet, isn’t it? Black Forest Cake Recipe

Birthday Cookies

Image
This is for my brother's birthday. It's actually two oversize cookies sandwiched together using cream cheese frosting. But I used a too small pan so the cookies were taller then they should be, made it look more like a layered cake than layered cookies. I love the idea of using colorful candies to decorate, simple and very easy but looks so festive. I love the frosting too, the cream cheese balances the sugar so it doesn't taste too sweet. Blue Birthday Cake

Image
Today is my birthday and I've been planning to bake myself a birthday cake. A decent one, with frosting and candle and cherries and all. A friend asked why it had to be blue. Well, I have two reasons. First, a very long time ago I stumbled upon a birthday greeting card in a book store. It had a picture of a slice of birthday cake, chocolate cake, and yes, with blue frosting. Baby blue precisely. I thought, how cute, it was a nice color combination of dark brown and baby blue. And blue was my favorite color at the time. I was thinking it would be nice if someone give me a cake like that on my birthday. Well, since no one has given me a blue cake until now, I decided to bake it myself. Second, I'm currently feeling like a blue birthday today, so the cake would be match with my current mood :) So, here it is, happy blue birthday to me! Black Forest Cake Recipe
